Arsenal among clubs interested in signing breakthrough star.

Bologna is coming to terms with the likelihood that they will not be able to retain Riccardo Calafiori for another season, despite the initial reluctance of their owner, Joey Saputo.

The club is already in the process of seeking a suitable replacement for Calafiori. The young Italian defender has attracted interest from major teams, notably Juventus and several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal.

This high demand could potentially lead to a bidding war in the coming weeks. The decision regarding Calafiori’s future is expected to be made after the conclusion of the European Championship.

According to Matteo Moretto, Arsenal has recently shown interest in Riccardo Calafiori and has begun exploring his profile. However, Juventus remains the frontrunner in the race to sign the Italian defender, having made the most significant progress compared to other interested team.

The left-footed defender Riccardo Calafiori started out as a left-back or left-sided wing-back. He moved to centre-back for Bologna under manager Thiago Motta because of his passing range and ability to initiate attacks from the back. His efforts in the 2023-24 season established him as one of Serie A’s best defenders. Calafiori is versatile, able to play in both a back three and a back four, and is known for his anticipation, aggressive and physical style, quickness, and power. He is praised for his technique, long-range shooting, and ball-carrying ability, and his height aids him in aerial duels. As a full-back, he was effective in providing crosses and supporting the defense with quick recoveries. Recognized as one of the most promising Italian talents of his generation.

Arsenal’s defence shows potential, but key players such as Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu were out injured last season, disturbing the team’s consistency. Signing another defender would provide essential cover, enhance tactical flexibility, offer depth for rotation, create competition, and future-proof the squad.
