Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain trains with Arsenal U21s after leaving Besiktas, revealing plans for his next move as he targets a return to English football.
Arsenal fans were greeted by a familiar face at London Colney this week as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made a surprise return to the training ground. The former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder has confirmed he’s eyeing a move to an English club after leaving Turkish side Besiktas earlier this year.
Now 32, Oxlade-Chamberlain is training with Arsenal’s Under-21 squad to maintain fitness while seeking his next club. His return marks a nostalgic moment for fans who remember his energetic displays in red and white during his six-year spell at the Emirates.
The midfielder joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2011 for £15 million and went on to make over 190 appearances before moving to Liverpool in 2017. Injuries marred his time at Besiktas, limiting him to 50 appearances across two seasons before he and the club mutually terminated his contract in August 2025.
Oxlade-Chamberlain Opens Up on His Future
Speaking on Ben Foster’s podcast, Oxlade-Chamberlain discussed the challenges of being a free agent mid-season and outlined his ambition to return to English football.
“It’s that awkward bit of waiting, like you’re missing out and you want to be playing,” he said. “It’s different now. I’m targeting a move to an English club.”
His comments make it clear that the next step in his career will likely come in the Premier League or Championship, where his experience and versatility could add real value.
Arteta Welcomes Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Training Stint
Mikel Arteta, who once shared a dressing room with the midfielder, expressed his support for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s training return at Arsenal.
“If we can help him, give him space to get up to speed and find a club, it’s a joy,” Arteta said. “The boys will learn from him. He’s a great role model.”
