Alan Smith urges Mikel Arteta to bench Martin Odegaard and hand Eberechi Eze a run as Arsenal’s title push stutters.
Arsenal’s Premier League title charge suffered another setback following a 3–2 home defeat to Manchester United, a result that prevented Mikel Arteta’s side from restoring a seven-point cushion at the top of the table.
The loss extended Arsenal’s difficult run, with the Gunners now winless in their last three league matches and managing just one victory in all competitions in 2026 so far.
Club captain Martin Odegaard found himself at the center of criticism after another underwhelming display. The Norwegian left the pitch before the hour mark against United, despite assisting Arsenal’s opening goal.
At 27, Odegaard aims to dictate games during decisive moments of the season. However, his influence has waned, contributing to just three goals in recent months, all of which came during a brief spell around the new year.
Alan Smith Urges Arteta to Make a Bold Call
Former Arsenal striker and club legend Alan Smith believes the time has come for Arteta to make a difficult decision.
“I think Arteta might just need to tweak his system a little bit and change some personnel,” Smith told Sky Sports.
Alan Smith urged Arsenal to give Eberechi Eze an extended run ahead of Martin Odegaard, insisting that midfield needs fresh energy.
“Perhaps it’s time to start Eze instead of Odegaard, who has struggled a little.”
Why Eberechi Eze Could Freshen Arsenal’s Attack
Signed in the summer, Eberechi Eze still fights for a consistent starting role, having missed a league start since mid-December.
The England international offers:
- Direct dribbling and creativity
- Goal threat from midfield
- The ability to break defensive lines
His inclusion could provide balance alongside Declan Rice and help supply attackers such as Viktor Gyokeres, who has also faced scrutiny over recent performances.
Despite calling for changes, Smith remains confident Arsenal can still lift the Premier League trophy.
“It would be a major fall from grace if they didn’t win it from here. They’ve got the best squad in the league,” he added.
Smith’s comments echo recent criticism from other Arsenal legends, including Patrick Vieira, who has questioned the team’s mentality and attacking efficiency.

Arteta Faces Defining Decisions
With upcoming fixtures against Leeds United and Sunderland, Arteta now faces on mounting pressure to arrest Arsenal’s slump. Dropping a club captain would be a significant statement, but Smith believes bold decisions may be required to reignite the title push.
As the season enters a decisive phase, Arsenal fans will be watching closely to see whether Arteta opts for loyalty — or change.
