Alan Shearer Fires Back at Fabian Hurzeler Over Arsenal Criticism

Alan Shearer hits back at Fabian Hurzeler after the Brighton boss Arsenal criticism tactics following their 1-0 Premier League win.

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer defended Arsenal after Fabian Hurzeler criticism, telling the Brighton boss to focus on his own team instead of questioning Mikel Arteta’s approach.

The reaction came after Arsenal’s narrow victory on Wednesday night, a result that intensified debate around Fabian Hurzeler criticism and the Gunners’ pragmatic style during the title run-in.

Bukayo Saka’s early goal secured a crucial 1-0 win at the Amex Stadium, pushing Arsenal seven points clear at the top of the Premier League after Manchester City drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest.

Brighton head coach Hurzeler did not hide his frustration after the defeat.

The German manager suggested Arsenal’s approach prioritised results over entertainment and criticised goalkeeper David Raya for repeatedly going to ground during the match.

“I think there was only one team who tried to play football today,” Hurzeler said in his post-match press conference.

He also pointed to the difference in effective playing time during Arsenal matches.

One game we played 60 minutes net time, but when you play Arsenal it’s only 50 minutes,” he added. “That’s ten minutes difference. This is what supporters are paying for.”

The Brighton boss had already raised concerns before the match about Arsenal’s set-piece routines and time management, claiming clearer Premier League rules were needed to limit delays.

Arteta responded briefly when asked about the comments.

What a surprise,” the Arsenal manager replied with clear sarcasm.

Shearer Delivers Blunt Response

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer pushed back strongly against Hurzeler’s remarks.

While the former Newcastle striker acknowledged that managers often speak emotionally after defeats, he insisted Arsenal have done nothing wrong.

I understand it’s a difficult moment after a loss,” Shearer said.

“But Arsenal fans won’t give a damn what he thinks. They watched the game, enjoyed the result, and that’s all that matters.”

Shearer then suggested Hurzeler should focus on Brighton’s form instead.

He’d be better concentrating on his own team. They’ve won three in sixteen games. None of that is Arsenal’s fault.”

The debate highlights a broader discussion about Arsenal’s evolution under Arteta.

In previous seasons critics accused the Gunners of being too open and vulnerable defensively. This campaign has seen a different version of the team — organised, disciplined and ruthless when protecting a lead.

Their ability to manage games, dominate set-pieces and shut down opponents has become a defining feature of the title push.

Gary Lineker also weighed in during the podcast, suggesting the criticism may actually reflect Arsenal’s growing threat.

It’s because you’re a threat — that’s why they do it,” he said.

Arsenal Focused Only on the Results

For Arsenal supporters, the argument may ultimately prove irrelevant.

If Arteta’s side finish the season lifting the Premier League trophy, the method will matter far less than the outcome.

As Shearer made clear, winning football matches — however they come — is the only thing that counts in a title race.
