Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli has been named to Brazil’s official shortlist for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, increasing the likelihood of an international call-up this month.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli, has been named in Brazil’s provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina. This announcement comes despite Martinelli currently being sidelined with a hamstring injury, raising questions about his fitness and availability for both club and country.

The Brazilian Football Association recently confirmed their 52-player shortlist for the World Cup qualifiers, with Martinelli making the cut. This inclusion highlights the high regard in which Brazil’s head coach, Dorival Junior, holds the young forward. The final 23-player squad will be announced next week, and Martinelli’s presence on the shortlist suggests that he remains a key part of Brazil’s plans.

Martinelli’s inclusion comes as a surprise, as Mikel Arteta had previously stated that the Brazilian would be out until after the international break due to a hamstring injury sustained in the 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final loss to Newcastle. Initially expected to be out for around a month, Martinelli’s recovery has been closely monitored by Arsenal’s medical team. Manager Mikel Arteta has provided updates indicating that Martinelli is progressing well and could potentially return to action ahead of fellow injured teammate Bukayo Saka.

Arteta has emphasized the importance of a cautious approach to Martinelli’s rehabilitation, ensuring that the player will be fully fit before making his return. The club is hopeful that Martinelli will be available for selection in April, but his inclusion in Brazil’s provisional squad suggests that he could be ready sooner.

It should be noted that this it a preliminary squad that has been named by the current World Champions. It will eventually be cut down, so it remains to be seen if the Arsenal star makes the final cut.

Martinelli’s potential return is a significant boost for Arsenal, who have been struggling with injuries to key players. The Gunners’ attacking options have been stretched thin, and Martinelli’s presence on the field could provide the much-needed spark in their pursuit of success in both domestic and European competitions.
