Arsenal are expected to name a new sporting director next month, having reduced their shortlist to four candidates to replace Edu.
Arsenal intends to appoint a new sporting director after Edu Gaspar’s departure in November 2024. The Brazilian left his role to oversee operations across multiple clubs owned by Evangelos Marinakis. Since then, Chief Scout and Recruitment Coordinator Jason Ayto has been filling in on an interim basis.
The Gunners have now drawn up a four-man shortlist to replace Edu and plan to make the appointment by the end of March. The candidates under consideration are:
Jason Ayto: Despite his interim role, Ayto is in contention for the permanent position. He has been with Arsenal since 2014 and has played a significant role in player recruitment and scouting. However, his lack of experience in negotiating with agents and other big clubs has raised concerns.
Dan Ashworth: The former Manchester United executive is another strong candidate. Ashworth has a wealth of experience, having held sporting director roles at Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, and Manchester United. His expertise in overseeing successful footballing projects makes him a compelling option for Arsenal.
Andrea Berta: The former Atletico Madrid sporting director is also on the shortlist. Berta played a crucial role in Atletico’s sustained success, making shrewd transfer decisions and helping the club compete at the highest level in La Liga and Europe. His experience and track record make him a strong contender for the role.
Roberto Olabe: Currently at Real Sociedad, Olabe has been credited with acquiring and nurturing top talents such as Martin Odegaard, Alexander Sorloth, and Takefusa Kubo. His strong track record in talent development and recruitment has made him a key candidate for the position.
Arsenal’s ownership, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE), is heavily involved in the recruitment process, which was initially headed by an independent recruitment firm. The Gunners are eager to make the appointment well before the summer transfer window commences, to ensure the new hire has time to integrate and prepare transfer plans.
While Ayto is highly regarded within the club, it is clear that a more experienced leader is required to lead Arsenal’s next iteration.
