According to reports, former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will be unveiled as Feyenoord’s new manager soon.
Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is reportedly set to be unveiled as Feyenoord’s new manager, according to ESPN. The news is a significant development in Van Persie’s burgeoning managerial career.
Van Persie, who retired from professional football in 2019, has been making waves in his first senior managerial role at Heerenveen. Despite a rocky start, including a record 9-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar, Van Persie has guided Heerenveen to a respectable mid-table position in the Eredivisie. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, and Feyenoord has expressed interest in bringing him on board.
Feyenoord parted ways with Brian Priske earlier this month following a string of poor performances in the Eredivisie. Pascal Bosschaart has been serving as the interim manager, leading the team to a notable victory over AC Milan in the Champions League. However, it seems Bosschaart will not be handed the position permanently.
Van Persie’s potential appointment is seen as an emotional return to the club where he began his professional career. He joined Feyenoord’s youth ranks in 1999 and made his professional debut at just 17 years old. After leaving Feyenoord for Arsenal, Van Persie went on to have successful stints at Manchester United and Fenerbahce before returning to Feyenoord for his final playing years.
The Dutch giants are currently in fourth place in the Eredivisie, 14 points behind leaders Ajax. Feyenoord’s Champions League campaign has been more promising, with the team progressing to the round of 16 after defeating AC Milan. Van Persie’s experience and tactical acumen will be crucial as Feyenoord aims to improve their domestic performance and make a deep run in Europe.
The official announcement of Van Persie’s appointment is expected in the coming days, with negotiations ongoing to secure his release from Heerenveen. Feyenoord also plans to bring Rene Hake, former assistant to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, to support Van Persie as his assistant.
