Renee Slegers stated that the final result of Sunday’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup fifth round was more important.
Arsenal Women’s head coach Renee Slegers shared her thoughts on the team’s 2-0 victory over London City Lionesses in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup fifth round. Slegers emphasized the importance of the win, stating, “The result was the most important thing. That was my main takeaway from today’s match.”
Slegers praised her team’s defensive performance, noting, “Clean sheet, I think they only had four shots, one on target.” She acknowledged the challenge posed by London City Lionesses, who are currently one of the top teams in the Championship. “They’re a good team, they’ve recruited some top players during the summer, and they put a lot of questions on us today.”
The coach also highlighted the tough playing conditions, describing the pitch as “wobbly” and leading to a “fighting game at times.” Despite this, Slegers was pleased with her team’s ability to secure the win and reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
Slegers also took the opportunity to commend Jenna Nighswonger, who made her debut for Arsenal in the match. “She’s a great person, and I’m happy she joined us. She’s taken a lot of initiative to understand what we expect from our players, and she did well in her role today.”
Looking ahead, Slegers emphasized the need for consistency and improvement as Arsenal continues to compete in multiple competitions. “We understand the big block of games that are behind us with very short turnarounds, two or three days in between games, with high demanding games against Chelsea and Man City. So seeing that and new partnerships on the pitch today again, a clean sheet and two goals and a win, that was most important today.”
