According to Spanish publication Relevo, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are keeping tabs on him, meanwhile, Real Sociedad has proposed a new improved deal but it hasn’t been accepted, and Arsenal wants to sign the midfielder with Emile Smith Rowe’s potential departure, the Gunners are keen to reinforce their squad and compete at the highest level.

Mikel Merino played a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign, even scoring the winning goal against Germany in the quarter-finals. Despite being 28 years old, his impressive track record of 348 senior club appearances makes him an attractive prospect for Arsenal. The Gunners are not only interested in young talents but also experienced players, as demonstrated by their pursuit for Merino.

One significant advantage for Arsenal is that Merino is entering the last year of his contract with Real Sociedad. The club’s financial situation and Merino’s potential price tag of £21 million (€25 million) make this a feasible move. While Real Sociedad would prefer to keep Merino, they are not confident about extending his stay. Meanwhile, fellow Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi remains a priority for the Spanish club.

Atletico Madrid is Arsenal’s main competitor for Merino’s signature, but the Gunners are well-positioned to secure the deal. Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is also on Atletico’s radar, but his higher price tag puts Merino in a favorable position.

Barcelona’s priority in the summer market is completing the purchase of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, while Barcelona admires Merino, their attention is focused on finalizing
the Nico Williams deal first.
