Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shed light on his decision to change Myles Lewis-Skelly’s position from midfield to left-back, revealing that it was a strategic move based on the team’s needs and Lewis-Skelly’s qualities.

Arteta explained, “The moment I saw him, the only way I could think was to change his position. If he wants to have a chance here, this is where he’s going to have it.” Arteta emphasized that Lewis-Skelly’s qualities fit well with the way Arsenal plays and that there was a necessity in the left-back position.

The young Hale End Academy graduate has excelled in his new role, showcasing his defensive skills and adaptability. Arteta praised Lewis-Skelly’s personality and willingness to embrace the change, saying, “He bought into it straight away with the personality that he has.”

Arteta also highlighted the physical demands of the left-back position and how Lewis-Skelly has managed to adapt. “Adapting to the role is not just on the defensive part. Physically, it’s very different demands. You’re facing wingers a lot of times in that position. You have to be part of the defensive line. You have to know when to release, when to not. When the ball is on your side, how you have to defend the box. Something that he wasn’t used to do that. And then all the attacking process on top of that.”

Lewis-Skelly’s impressive performances have not only earned him a permanent spot in the team but also caught the attention of fans and pundits.
