Raheem Sterling in contention to start north London derby after timely recovery from injury.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence in Raheem Sterling to step up and make an impact in the upcoming North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur. With Bukayo Saka out until at least March due to a hamstring injury, Sterling is expected to play a crucial role on the right wing.
Sterling, who joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea last summer, has been in and out of the team due to injuries but recently returned to full fitness. Arteta was impressed with Sterling’s performance after coming on as a substitute in the FA Cup match against Manchester United, where he showed great intent and confidence.
“I was really happy with the way he (Sterling) came in [against Manchester United],” said Arteta on the eve of the derby. “Since he had the injury and he came back, you could sense he was going to give us something important. Great, because we need him. You could see what he can bring. He is used to playing in this kind of context and the demands that we have, every three days. Great to have him.”
Sterling has a strong record against Tottenham, having scored eight goals and provided five assists in 25 appearances against his former clubs. His experience and ability to perform in high-pressure situations make him a valuable asset for Arsenal in this crucial fixture.
The Gunners are coming off a challenging week, having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United and losing the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle. Despite these setbacks, Arteta believes the team is more resilient this year and is capable of bouncing back.
