Shay Given thinks William Saliba and Gabriel were frightened by Alexander Isak during Arsenal’s loss to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has claimed that Arsenal defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes were “frightened” by Newcastle striker Alexander Isak during their 2-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.
Given, who was providing punditry for Sky Sports, observed that Isak’s pace and movement caused significant problems for the Arsenal center-backs. “The two centre-backs, Saliba and Gabriel, have been probably ones of the best parts of Arsenal but I think they’re scared of Isak a bit,” Given said during his half-time analysis.
Isak, who has scored 10 goals in his last nine appearances, delivered an impressive performance before being substituted in the 65th minute due to concerns over a hamstring injury. His goal in the first half and the assist for Anthony Gordon’s second goal highlighted his impact on the game.
Jamie Redknapp, a fellow Sky Sports commentator, agreed with Given, saying, “That was the difference between the two sides – Newcastle had Isak.” I’m sure every Arsenal fan wished they had because that’s the level you had to get to.”
The defeat leaves Arsenal with a tough task to reach Wembley in the second leg at St James’ Park. Given’s comments have added to the scrutiny on Saliba and Gabriel, who will need to improve their performance to help Arsenal mount a comeback.
