Newcastle defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening at the Emirates Stadium.
Newcastle United secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening. The result leaves Arsenal with a daunting task as they prepare for the second leg at St James’ Park next month.
Alexander Isak was the star of the show, scoring both goals for Newcastle. The Swedish striker opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a clinical finish after Arsenal’s defense failed to clear a long ball. Isak’s second goal came shortly after halftime when he forced Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into a save, with Anthony Gordon capitalizing on the rebound to double Newcastle’s lead.
Despite Arsenal’s dominance in terms of possession and chances, they were unable to break through Newcastle’s resilient defense. The Gunners spurned several promising opportunities, including a Gabriel Martinelli effort that hit the post in the first half.
Newcastle’s victory extends their winning run to seven games in all competitions, while Arsenal now faces an uphill battle to overturn the deficit in the second leg. The match was packed with goal-scoring opportunities, but Newcastle’s clinical finishing proved to be the difference.
