Troy Deeney has identified Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as his biggest disappointment of 2024 and has characterized Gabriel Jesus’ performances for Arsenal this year as ‘stinky’.
Troy Deeney, the former Watford sensation, has not held back in his assessment of the Premier League’s underperforming stars this year, naming Marcus Rashford as 2024’s most notable disappointment.
In a recent interview with talkSPORT, former Watford captain Troy Deeney didn’t hold back when naming Marcus Rashford as the biggest disappointment of 2024. Deeney, known for his candid opinions, criticized Rashford’s performance this season, stating, “Who’s been a flop for me… it sounds like I’m piling on and I don’t mean to, but you probably have to say Marcus.”
Rashford, who had a stellar 2022-23 season with 30 goals, has struggled to replicate that form this year. With just eight goals in the Premier League so far, Deeney believes Rashford has not lived up to expectations. “Flop’s a hard word but I mean disappointment in terms of expectation and what we think he can deliver.
Deeney also took aim at Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus, describing his performances as “stinky”. Jesus has scored only one Premier League goal this year, and Deeney suggested that it might be time for him to consider retirement. “Personally, when you start telling people that [goals are not my strong point], it’s time to call it a day.”
Rashford’s attitude has also come under scrutiny. Deeney pointed out an incident where Rashford was left out of the starting lineup against Arsenal and responded by sulking on the pitch. “What I’m on about with ‘baby’ is the attitude, he didn’t start against Arsenal, so he thinks he should start. So to prove to people that you should start, he’s just going to walk around, how does that logic work? That’s what a baby does, that’s what my kids do when they don’t get what they want, they sulk and scream and cry.”
Despite the criticism, Rashford has indicated that he is ready for a new challenge and may seek a move away from Manchester United. Deeney believes that a fresh start could be what Rashford needs to reignite his career.
