Riccardo Calafiori has shared how a heartfelt phone call from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta played a crucial role in his decision to join the Gunners.
The Italy international defender, who has played at both left and right-back for the Gunners, moved to north London in a £42million switch from Bologna in July on a five-year contract and discussed his initial conversation with Arteta in an interview with BBC Sport.
Arsenal first reached out to Calafiori about a year before his official transfer, initially through letters. Arteta eventually requested a phone call. “He first wrote to me and then said, ‘Can I call you?'” Calafiori recalled. “It was so humble and easy on the phone. He wanted to explain the situation, what they thought about me, and what their plans were for me.”
During the call, Calafiori described Arteta as “humble and easy to talk to.” The manager took the time to convey his vision for the team and how Calafiori could fit into that plan. This personal touch and genuine interest in Calafiori’s career left a significant impression on the young defender.
Although Calafiori had also been in discussions with Juventus, he ultimately chose Arsenal because of the club’s stature and Arteta’s convincing pitch. “I didn’t reed much convincing thanks to the club’s reputation,” Calafiori admitted. “But the way Mikel spoke to me and explained everything made me feel valued and wanted.”
Since joining Arsenal, Calafiori has quickly become a fan favorite. He made his debut off the bench against Aston Villa in August 2024 and has started each of the Gunners’ last six matches across all competitions.
With his impressive performances and a strong start to his Arsenal career, Calafiori is proving to be an excellent addition to the squad. His journey from the Roma academy to the Emirates Stadium showcases his resilience and determination, especially after overcoming a serious knee injury that could have ended his career.
