Arsenal Women faced a challenging night in Sweden as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against BK Häcken in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying second-round tie.

The game started with both teams battling for control in a frantic opening. Arsenal’s Alessia Russo and Mariona Caldentey created early chances, but the Gunners struggled to convert their opportunities into goals. Rosa Kafaji, making her first competitive start against her former club, came close to breaking the deadlock around the half-hour mark, only to be denied by the crossbar.

BK Häcken, on the other hand, posed threats with their pacy forwards, but Arsenal’s defense held firm, aided by the offside flag. The first half ended goalless, prompting Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall to make a tactical change, bringing on Frida Maanum for Kafaji to bolster the attack.

The second half saw Arsenal continue to press for a goal. Maanum linked up well with Mariona, forcing Häcken into conceding an indirect free-kick, which was ultimately cleared. Despite Arsenal’s dominance in possession, it was Häcken who found the breakthrough. In the 77th minute, a ball over the top allowed Tabitha Tindell to break clear and score past Manuela Zinsberger, giving the hosts a crucial lead.

Arsenal pushed for an equalizer, with Maanum hitting the crossbar and the opposition keeper making crucial saves. However, the Gunners were unable to find the back of the net, leaving them with a one-goal deficit to overturn in the return leg.

Arsenal will host BK Häcken at Meadow Park next Thursday for the deciding leg. With a one-goal deficit, the Gunners still have a chance to progress to the group stage of the Champions League. Before that, they will kick off their Women’s Super League campaign with a significant clash against Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium this Sunday.
