Gary Neville praises Arsenal’s Noni Madueke after doubting his move, sparking debate over Chelsea’s £50M transfer decision.
Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has made a striking reversal in his opinion on Arsenal’s summer signing, Noni Madueke, suggesting that Chelsea may have misjudged the winger’s potential when they sold him for over £50 million earlier this year.
Initially skeptical of Arsenal’s decision to invest heavily in Madueke, Neville admitted on The Overlap that he understood why Chelsea let the England international go. During his time at Stamford Bridge, Madueke was inconsistent, scoring just 13 league goals in two-and-a-half seasons. But recent performances have forced Neville to reconsider.
“I’ll be honest with you, I’d seen him play quite a lot at Chelsea and when Arsenal signed him I thought, I can see why Chelsea sort of let him go,” Neville said. “I tell you – what a different player at Arsenal, and in the England games in the last few weeks”.
Madueke’s standout display in England’s 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over Serbia, where he scored and made several incisive runs, caught Neville’s eye. He described the 23-year-old as “one hell of a player on the right,” even suggesting tactical shifts at Arsenal to accommodate his growing influence.
Tactical Implications for Arsenal
Neville floated the idea of Bukayo Saka switching flanks to the left, especially with Gabriel Martinelli struggling for form. While he was clear that Saka remains the superior player, Madueke’s emergence could offer Mikel Arteta more flexibility in attack.
Jamie Carragher, Neville’s fellow pundit, was less convinced about moving Saka from his preferred position but acknowledged Madueke’s impact, calling him England’s “best player” under Thomas Tuchel.
Chelsea’s Regret?
Chelsea fans were initially unfazed by Madueke’s departure, especially with promising replacements like Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens stepping up. However, Neville’s comments and Madueke’s resurgence may prompt a reevaluation of the club’s transfer strategy.
Despite not yet registering a goal or assist for Arsenal, Madueke’s performances have injected excitement into the Gunners’ fanbase and raised eyebrows across the Premier League. Whether this form continues remains to be seen, but for now, Neville’s U-turn adds another layer to the ever-evolving narrative of Premier League transfers.
