Sambi Lokonga leaves Arsenal for Bundesliga side Hamburg in a permanent transfer, aiming to revive his career with regular playtime.
Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga has completed a permanent transfer from Arsenal to Bundesliga side Hamburger SV. The move marks a new chapter for the 25-year-old, who has struggled for consistent playing time in the Premier League.
Lokonga signed for Arsenal in 2021 from Anderlecht, bringing high expectations and technical flair to Mikel Artetaβs midfield. Despite a promising start, he found regular minutes hard to come by, making just 24 appearances in his debut season.
Over the next few years, Lokonga went on loan to Crystal Palace, Luton Town, and Sevilla. These spells offered glimpses of his potential, but injuries and competition limited his impact.
Hamburger SV, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, have signed Lokonga on a permanent basis. The deal includes a sell-on clause, allowing Arsenal to benefit from any future transfer. Lokonga passed his medical and was officially unveiled by the German club earlier this week.
This move gives Hamburg a versatile midfielder with top-flight experience, while offering Lokonga the stability heβs been seeking.
Arsenalβs Midfield Reshuffle Continues
Lokongaβs departure is part of Arsenalβs ongoing squad reshaping. With increased competition in midfield, the club has opted to streamline its roster and focus on players who fit Artetaβs tactical vision.
The transfer also frees up wages and squad space for potential future signings.
In a recent interview, Lokonga expressed his desire for a long-term home:
βI need a club where I can stay for two or three years, to play and develop again.β
Hamburg offers him that opportunity. With regular playing time and a fresh environment, Lokonga could rediscover the form that once earned him comparisons to Yaya TourΓ©.
