Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad. The 28-year-old, who was a key figure in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, joins the Gunners on a four-year contract with an option for an additional year.

The transfer fee for Merino is reported to be an initial €32.5 million (£27.4 million), with potential add-ons that could bring the total to €37.5 million (£31.6 million). Merino completed his medical last week and has been unveiled as Arsenal’s latest addition to their midfield ranks.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his excitement about the signing, highlighting Merino’s experience and versatility. “Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility,” Arteta said. “He has played at the top of the game at both club and international level for a number of seasons now. Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality”.

Merino, who can operate as both a No. 8 and a holding midfielder, is expected to complement Arsenal’s existing midfield options, including Declan Rice, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Ødegaard. His ability to play in various midfield roles will provide Arteta with tactical flexibility and depth.

Merino’s recent success with the Spanish national team, where he played a crucial role in their Euro 2024 victory, shows his winning mentality and big-game experience. His performances throughout the tournament, including a decisive goal in the quarter-finals against Germany, have made him a highly sought-after player.

Sporting Director Edu emphasized the strategic importance of Merino’s signing. “This has been another great team effort from many people at the club to finalize the transfer of a player who attracted interest from a number of clubs over the summer. Mikel was a key target for us this summer, and we identified him as a player who can fit perfectly into our squad and profile to improve us, as we aim to build on our strong performances of last season”.

Merino will wear the No. 23 shirt at Arsenal and is set to join his new teammates immediately. His arrival marks Arsenal’s third signing of the summer transfer window, following the acquisitions of Riccardo Calafiori and the permanent signing of David Raya.
