Arsenal’s new striker Viktor Gyokeres received a strong warning from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney following his Premier League debut. The Swedish forward, signed from Sporting CP for £64 million, struggled to make an impact in Arsenal’s narrow 1–0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Gyokeres arrived in North London with high expectations after scoring 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting. However, his first match in England’s top flight was far from convincing. Substituted in the second half for Kai Havertz, Gyokeres looked isolated and failed to register a shot on target.

Rooney’s Honest Assessment

Wayne Rooney, speaking on his BBC podcast, acknowledged Gyokeres’ talent but warned of the challenges ahead. “He didn’t have much support, but you could see his strength in moments,” Rooney said. “This league is different. There’s more pressure, and not every player can handle it.”

Rooney also reflected on his own experience facing Gyokeres during his time at Coventry City. He praised the striker’s physicality but emphasized the mental demands of playing for a top club like Arsenal.

Rooney’s comments highlight the intense scrutiny that comes with a big-money move. “Arsenal need a reliable striker, and they’ve put their trust in him,” Rooney added. “Now the question is: can he handle that pressure? We’ve seen players at Manchester United who couldn’t.”

Arsenal’s Title Hopes Remain Alive

Despite Gyokeres’ quiet debut, Rooney believes Arsenal are still strong contenders for the Premier League title. With new signings like Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, and Christian Norgaard, the Gunners have added depth and quality to their squad.

“They can win the title,” Rooney said. “You can’t judge them on one performance.”
