Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking a strong start to their season. However, the win was not without its critiques, particularly from Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who had some pointed comments about Gabriel Martinelli’s performance.

During the match, Martinelli had a golden opportunity to assist Declan Rice, which could have easily doubled Arsenal’s lead before halftime. Instead, the Brazilian forward opted to take the shot himself, much to the frustration of the home fans and Ian Wright. The former Arsenal striker expressed his disappointment, suggesting that Martinelli’s decision-making was influenced by his desire to impress manager Mikel Arteta and secure his place in the starting lineup, especially with competition from Leandro Trossard.
Wright criticised not only the squandered chance, but also Martinelli’s whole attitude. He noted that Martinelli seemed “desperate” to make an impact, which led to poor decision-making on the field. Wright emphasized that a more team-oriented play, such as passing to Rice, would have been the better choice and could have led to a more comfortable lead going into the break.
