Arsenal Lyon Women’s Champions League semi-final kicked off with a dramatic first leg at the Emirates Stadium, where Lyon edged Arsenal 2-1. The result leaves the Gunners trailing on aggregate ahead of the decisive second leg.
Lyon opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Kadidiatou Diani fired a precise shot into the bottom corner. Although the goal was initially flagged offside, a VAR review confirmed it, giving Lyon the early lead.
Arsenal Fight Back but Fall Short
Arsenal responded with attacking intent. Frida Maanum and Beth Mead both came close to equalizing, yet Lyon’s defense held firm. Meanwhile, Melchie Dumornay nearly doubled the lead with a brilliant lob that struck the crossbar.
In the second half, Arsenal found a breakthrough. After a VAR review confirmed a foul on Leah Williamson, Mariona Caldentey converted the penalty to level the score. However, Lyon quickly regained the lead when Dumornay raced through the defense to score the decisive goal.
The second leg of the Arsenal Lyon Women’s Champions League semi-final will take place at Groupama Stadium on April 27. Arsenal will need a strong performance to overturn the deficit and secure a place in the final.
